About the history of the Delphic Games

The modern Delphic Games are considered the successors of the ancient Greek Pythia - a nationwide event of Ancient Hellas, designed to glorify the patron of the arts of Apollo. The name "Delphic" they received at the venue - in honor of those located at Parnassus, by the way - the estates of the good god, Delph. For the first time they were appointed to hold the Delphic oracle in 582 BC, in order to give praise to Apollo, who killed Python and freed the ancient prophet. Actually, in honor of this, they erected a temple there, in which the oracle worked.

The Pythian Games were a very interesting agon - there not only waged wrestling, chariot races and sports, but also adherents of various types of art, which Apollo patronized, performed. They mainly honored playing the kifar and singing under it, because it was this musical instrument that they loved more than others. In 394 A.D. The Pythian Games, together with the Olympic Games, were abolished by the Roman Emperor Theodosius the First, who intended to completely eradicate the spirit of culture of Ancient Greece on the Hellenic lands under his control.

However, the idea of combining sports with the spiritual has not died. Pierre de Coubertin, who revived the Olympic Games, urged everyone to take part in art competitions, whose theme is dedicated to sports. Then art enthusiasts tried to revive the Delphic Games with a couple of festivals in 1927 and 1930. in their historical homeland, however, due to funding problems, the idea had to be forgotten for the time being. At the end of the 20th century, an outstanding public figure Christian Kirsch enlisted the support of the powers that be, as well as prominent artists, and revived the Delphic Games in the form in which we know them now.

Under the patronage of UNESCO and the Council of Europe, the International Delphic Council was created in 1994, the main goals and objectives of the movement were declared. And Russia became the main locomotive in their advancement. At the same time, in many willing countries, their national organizations have opened, supporting the Delphic Strategy and adapting it to the peculiarities of their land. They are entitled to hold their own festivals and competitions. In particular, the centers of movement are known in Germany, Belarus, China, Greece, Nigeria, the USA, Japan and the Philippines. Interestingly, regardless of the Berlin organization, in 2003 the Russians opened their own MDK in Moscow, insisting on a different history of the movement as a whole.

The first revived youth Delphic Games were held in Tbilisi, organized by the Georgian headquarters of the IBC in 1997, and competitions for adults were held for the first time in Moscow, in 2000. At the moment, the Delphic Games are completely independently held by two organizations: the MDK with headquarters in Berlin and regional offices in many countries of the world, and the Russian MDK, headed by V. Ponyavin.
